Sharon Barker – Volunteer

When my sister was diagnosed with cancer in her mid-thirties, the centre was there offering support practically and emotionally, it was a place to talk, share, learn, and form new friendships. The team understood it was not just the impact on the person with cancer it had a ripple effect on the rest of the family, and I felt that warm welcome too.

Nine years later I have since gained a qualification in cancer support, had some training with Macmillan, and undertaken several years of academic study with an aim to become a qualified counsellor where one of my placements has been at Marie Curie Hospice in Solihull. These skills I feel are invaluable to help listen when people are facing challenges, and I see this as a way of giving back to the centre for the support that has been offered to my family and me.
